Atlantis

Europe

When we booked our Atlantian adventure, we anticipated day-long spans of outdoor relaxation. We thought we'd get away from snowy Chicago, sit on the beach or lounge at poolside, soak up the sun, sip some tropical drinks, and generally do nothing. It didn't work out that way.

The Atlantis was such an unusual place that we spent a good deal of our time just exploring the fascinating grounds. The resort amounts to a theme park based on the idea of the famous "lost continent." It's a blend of Jules Verne, mythical underwater "ruins," Mayan-like constructions, and a world-class aquarium. The architect's imagination ran wild! Some of the features make you believe that you're in Mexico in some ancient Mayan city.

There's a river float where you can glide along on innertubes under the palm trees. It took several tubes to support me! There are a variety of water slides. Some are gentle, like the one Dot is on (below right). Some are steep and suicidal. Dot wouldn't let me go down them. (No kidding.)
Even the jacuzzi (at least one of 'em) was themed. Here we are in a jacuzzi that's built like a temple--with seahorse decorations.
