Chicago had a record snowfall in 1999. A January 2nd storm dropped 18.6 inches on us--the most ever recorded in a 24 hour period. By that storm's end, on January 3rd, there was more than TWO FEET of snow on the ground! For the balance of the month it seemed to snow some 3-6 inches every couple of days. The constant clearing of driveway and walks got tiresome. Dot and I beat the snow--by LEAVING TOWN.

On January 24th we flew to Paradise Island in the Bahamas for a "quickie" trip (four days) to the Atlantis Resort & Casino. Here's how the Atlantis appears looking across from Nassau to Paradise Island. It's a big place.
Atlantis is the largest structure on Paradise Island. And, yes, Paradise Island really is an island (and a paradise). If you're thinking about a winter escape to Nassau, we believe a stay at the Atlantis is certainly a vacation worth considering.

When we traveled there, Atlantis had just opened its new "Royal Tower" (on the right). We took advantage of a special promotional package for our visit. The Resort is an aquatic tour de force with some 14 acres of tropical water park and lagoons. Its aquarium holds eight million gallons of water.

Atlantis has all of the amenities that might be expected of a great ocean-front resort, including a private beach. Privacy insures that patrons aren't bothered by vendors selling hats, hawking souvenirs, or hustling various water sports. But all the typical water activities, like para-sailing, jet-skis, banana boats, etc., are available from the resort itself if you want them. It's just that nobody pesters you about them.

Perhaps you'd enjoy a drink or snack in an elegant beachside refreshment area. Or maybe your preference is a cool grotto with an aquarium viewing window. If you're so disposed, you might even get a refreshing beachfront massage.
When high surf or brisk winds render the beach unsuitable for swimming, there's a placid lagoon behind the beach where the water is always gentle. There you can rent a single-person or two-person "Spy-Yak" for a pleasant paddle excursion that gives a glass-bottom view of the lagoon.

If saltwater bathing isn't your thing, there are a number of freshwater pools at various places throughout the complex
But Atlantis is much more than an exclusive and very complete beach resort--it is an incredible fantasy experience!
