It was shortly before noon on DAY 21 of our tour that we departed Salamanca for Madrid--with a stop en route at Avila.
Avila is a walled city. The 36 foot high walls have remained intact since they were built in the 12th century. They completely encircle the city.

We lunched at Avila. (By now we were experienced patrons of tapas bars and sidewalk cafes.) The city is home to Saint Teresa where there is a basilica in her honor. We visited the church.

When we visit churches, Dot often lights a candle. Generally this involves making an offering of a coin or two--presumably to pay for the candle. However, at the Basilica of St. Teresa, when Dot dropped a coin in the box, a whole line of little ELECTRIC candles lit up! Saint Teresa's basilica had gone high-tech! Now, instead of candles, the offering apparently pays for the electricity.
