Our Free Afternoon
 
 
Our afternoon was free. Dot and I used it to visit the world-famous Gulbenkian Museum. The museum houses a wonderful collection of furniture, tapestries, some magnificent timepieces, as well as paintings (by Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Monet, Renoir, and others), and some beautiful statuary.

 
Lisbon has a convenient and comprehensive system of public transportation. There are subways, streetcars, and buses. The subway was super-clean. Its floors and walls were finished in polished marble. We used the subway to reach the Gulbenkian.

Some of Lisbon's streetcars were behemoth-looking contrivances--like the one on the left.
But in honor of Expo '98--which was going on during our stay--the city had restored to service some charming old-fashioned streetcars with ornate interiors and brocade upholstery. We took the time for a very entertaining ride on one of these historic conveyances. In the photo below (right), note the elegant fabric on this beautiful old seat.
