In Lisbon we stayed at the Hotel Mundial. The hotel was well located, with an elegant top-floor restaurant that overlooked the city. Immediately outside there was some fascinating statuary and an enjoyable "walk-through" fountain.

The hotel was within easy walking distance of the city's major squares and tourist areas. Lisbon sidewalks are famous for their limestone and basalt designs.

On this, the ninteenth day of our travels, our schedule called for a half-day city tour. Because we had already seen the riverfront attractions upon our arrival the previous day, our morning tour was more leisurely than it might otherwise have been. We did a walking tour through the narrow streets of the Alfama District.

And we visited the cavernous Jeronimos Monesterio church where we saw the tomb of Vasco de Gama. We arrived just in time to view the church and tomb. After we departed, the monastery was closed for a wedding. Had we been just a few minutes later, we might not have been able to enter this impressive building. A bit of good luck for us!
