Lisbon, Portugal

We arrived in Lisbon in the early afternoon on the 18th day of our tour.

From the east, entrance to Lisbon is across the longest suspension bridge in Europe. It spans the Tagus River and looks very much like San Francisco's Golden Gate. (Not surprising, because both bridges were built by the same company.)

Near the bridge, there is a large masonry statue of Christ overlooking the river. That's in keeping with Portugal's Catholic tradition.

Katy, at her efficient best, had apparently determined that our hotel rooms were not yet available. (Katy "lived" on her cell phone, constantly gathering crucial information and routinely tinkering with our schedule to make sure that purposeless "waits" were avoided.)

Because of Katy's efficiency, we were able to go immediately to some of Lisbon's principal river-front attractions. These included the world famous Monument to the Discoveries (below on the left) and also the beautiful Torre Belem (below on the right).

The river front also hosts a tribute to a remarkable accomplishment by a pair of Portuguese aviation pioneers. There is a replica of their two-seater, open-cockpit, bi-plane/seaplane which made a trans-Atlantic crossing in 1922--five years before "Lucky Lindy's" solo flight in the Spirit of Saint Louis.
