The Bund

The phrase, "Shanghai Waterfront," has an ominous and sinister sound to it. That dates back to the time when drunken sailors and unconscious derelicts were kidnapped ("Shanghaied" as they say) for years of shipboard service.

Nowadays the Shanghai waterfront is known as The Bund. It is an elevated, landscaped, grand promenade. The busy waterways of Shanghai harbor are on the seaward side. Well, actually the water is a river that empties into the sea (and across the river is a space-age television tower and many large buildings). On the landward side, the street is lined with elegant commercial buildings, foreign consulates, banks, and other magnificent structures.
