We took the water taxi over to Nassau for a little local sightseeing. Here's the ticket-seller for the taxi. We had to wait about 45 minutes for the taxi to depart. (In the Bahamas, speed and promptness don't seem to count for much.) Because of the wait, we tried to talk the young lady into an "early booking discount." No success there!

In town, we visited the Queen's Staircase, we toured ever-so-tiny Fort Fincastle, and we went to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the entire island.

At the straw market we watched local artisans fashioning souvenirs, and we bought a T-shirt.

The local library (below) used to be a jail. I was fascinated by it. That's because it was designed as a "panopticon" according to the style proposed by the early 19th century social theorist and penologist, Jeremy Bentham. The style made it a miniature replica of the huge circular cell blocks that characterize Stateville Penitentiary in Illinois.
Can you imagine going to Nassau--and visiting the LIBRARY? There's just no explaining what some people will do!
