Tangier (again)

We arrived about mid-afternoon on our return visit to Tangier.

After a stop at the Malcolm Forbes museum, we checked into the El Minza Hotel, located in the bustling "downtown" area. There was time for some shopping and sightseeing on our own before dinner.

We learned from Katy that the famous Humphrey Bogart-Ingrid Bergman movie "Casablanca" had actually been shot in Tangier. Bogey's cafe, known in the movie as "Rick's Cafe Americaine," had really been Tangier's "Gran Cafe De Paris."

Well! Off we went to Rick's Cafe! It turned out to be just a short walk around the corner from the El Minza. ( For a Hotel, nothing beats a great location!)

Would you believe that I couldn't buy a beer--or anything alcoholic--at Rick's Cafe? (It was an Arab establishment--nothing alcoholic served!) Bogey would have died. Also, there was no Sam at the piano to "Play it again." In fact, there was no piano.

The only "bar" was a service coffee bar, and it was noticeably UN-BUSY. Dot felt conspicuous because she was the only woman in the place. (Arab cafes are male havens that women don't enter--but Dot's a very courageous person!)

We hung around Rick's Cafe long enough to finish the Coca-colas that we had ordered (but didn't really want.) Then we meandered back to the hotel for an evening meal.

The next day, it was "Good-Bye" to Hussein, our "bus-boy," and . . .

an early crossing of the straits on our way to Gibraltar!
