Touring Marrakesh

The city tour took us to the spice & herb market, to Marrakesh's casbah, and to the magnificent square known as the Djemaa-el Fna. I think, for most of us, the memories of that square will be indelible! What a place!

The Spice & Herb Market was an unabashed sales excursion (just as a visit to the rug market had been in Fez). However, there was little pressure, and the sales person's spiel was entertaining.

The Casbah in Marrakesh may have been a little more up-scale than what we had experienced in Fez. Even so, it seems a visit to ANY Moroccan market is a little bit like dropping your brain in a blender. Always an experience!

By the way, I DID learn something about Morrocan markets. A market in Morocco is called a "Souk." If the market is in the CENTER of a city, then it's called a "Medinah." If the market is within a FORTIFIED city (with a wall around it), then the market is called a "Casbah." At least, I'm pretty sure that's how souks, medinahs, and casbahs are distinguished.

The great square, Place Djemaa-el Fna, had a variety of food, drink, and fruit stands. There were acrobats, and monkey trainers, and other entertainers. There were gaudily-dressed water-bearers--like this fellow--who provided a photo op in exchange for a few coins.

Of all the sights in the square, I think the snake charmers were most thrilling. They were working with COBRAS! As you can see, the audience stood well back. I was glad my video camera had a zoom lens!
