Seville

Both Dot and I feel that Seville was a "showcase city" among the Spanish destinations covered on this trip. Our hotel, the Plaza De Armas, was nicely located. We could easily stroll along the placid Guadalquivir River (on which our entire group had a pleasant boat ride). We could walk to various sights (like the Naval Tower) or---by going in another direction--to large department stores like Marks & Spencer's or to the English store. We stayed for two nights. That eased the pace a bit, especially because Dot and I opted out of the Flamenco show that was scheduled for the second evening.

The things about Seville that really turned us on were:

  • The Cathedral of Seville. It was grand, and it was famous for being the actual burial place of Christopher Columbus.

  • Seville's Royal Palace. This was the first "Alcazar" that we were to see--and here we gained our initial glimpse of Spanish non-religious splendor and riches in centuries past.

  • The bull ring, which Dot and I visited during our "free time," had a profound emotional impact on us (although we arrived in Seville a week too early for the actual bull-fighting season).
