The first order of business was a bus tour of the city's principal tourist attractions. The tour helped us get oriented, and provided an overview of what we would enjoy later.
Madrid has many impressive plazas, monuments, and quite a few fountains. Here's a sampling which includes a fountain honoring Neptune, a monument to Cervantes featuring Don Quixote, a statue of Columbus, and a memorial to the Mother of the Gods (Cibeles). |

The works above obviously reflect the classical and the traditional. But Dot and I were particularly fond of a sun-bathing nude by Botero. It's anything but traditional, and it tickled us that Madrid displayed Botero's work right along with those of more austere artists.
We think Botero's sculptures are marvelously entertaining. This sculpture is near the plaza honoring Columbus. There's another Botero at Madrid's airport. He has a genuine appreciation for corpulence. Let's hear it for Botero and fat people! Hey, Hey!
