The Great Wall

The Great Wall was a definite high point of our journey. We had dreamed of visiting it--and it fulfilled every expectation. Overall, the Great Wall is more than 3,000 miles long (some 5,000 kilometers). Astronauts have reported that it is actually visible from space.

Near Beijing (at a spot called Badaling, where we visited) much of the wall has been reconstructed; but it's possible to see, in the distance, some crumbled parts that have yet to be rebuilt. The wall follows the very crest of each hill on which it is built. As a consequence, walking along the wall is a strenuous activity. In some places you must climb to quite a height.
