To us, the Forbidden City might be best described as something like a "puzzle box"--at least an architectural puzzle box. Visitors pass through a huge building into a spacious courtyard, which then leads to another building, and then to another courtyard, and so on. There seem to be more buildings and courtyards than you can count. We are told that there are some 9,000 rooms in the Forbidden City!
